Vimto stall in Manchester circa 1927

This remarkable soft drink, born in Manchester in 1908, was in existence when the titanic sunk, has gone through two world wars, was around when the Empire State building was completed, when the first man walked on the moon and has progressed into modern times when the World Wide Web was first created as well as breaking several world records along the way!

Created with the original crock bottle available in 1908 in mind, there will only be circa 6,000 bottles produced of this must-have collectors’ piece available to buy containing the Original Vimto cordial – a recipe that still remains a secret 100 years on.

Vimto was first created by the Chairman’s grandfather, (John) Noel Nichols. Originally developed as a medicine and sold as a health tonic called ’Vim Tonic’ (vim meaning strength/energy in Latin) it soon became known as ‘Vimto’.

By 1920, bubbles were added to some variants and the concentrate sent to bottling factories around the UK, in 1924 Vimto concentrate had reached Guyana in South America and India, and by 1926 Vimto could be bought in local corner shops as well as the temperance bars. Promotional materials started to appear and as early as 1920 in the UK, and from 1928 Vimto adverts were projected onto cinema screens in England and India.

Grandson of the founder, Chairman John Nichols, Vimto brand owner, Nichols plc, said: “This year represents a momentous occasion for us as not many British brands can claim to be 100 years old and as successful and popular across the world today as Vimto.

“The limited edition crock bottle is a piece of history in the making and we are sure consumers will be keen to get their hands on it. I am proud to be part of the Nichols family who, to this day, keep the brand name of Vimto alive.”

Mawson’s, the producer of the limited edition crock bottle, is also celebrating its 75th year this year and their working relationship with Vimto dates back to 1933. Also based in the North West, Mawson’s are well-known for their traditional drinks such as Sarsaparilla, Dandelion & Burdock and Cream Soda.
